Charleston is one of the oldest North American cities with an African presence. During its early years, it had a few buildings and lacked proper resources. By the end of the 17th century, John Archdale was appointed as Charleston’s governor. He implemented excellent strategies that helped build the city.

Years after a general decline, the residents staged a political overthrow, after which Francis Nicholson took over, and the city was renamed Charles Town. In 1730, King George II purchased this land, and the Royal government took over the city. Soon it changed to a commerce hub and housed a lot of immigrants.

In 1774, South Carolina became independent but remained under constant attacks by the British. In 1782, the city was evacuated. After the American Revolution though, Charleston experienced an economic boom. Many industries expanded, and the importance of slavery increased, which led to stringent restrictions, and gradually, all of this led to America’s famous Civil War.

Even with its varied history of ups and downs, Charleston has maintained a strong sense of place and charm, making it an ideal place to visit today!
